News: First look at A&E’s “BATES MOTEL”

Unless you just happen to love reality TV (in which case, I pity you) it’s hard to get excited about most of the crap that passes for television programming these days.  One thing you can count on, for better or worse, is that if something is a huge success, studios and networks will trip over themselves trying to replicate it. Thanks to the popularity of shows like True Blood, Walking Dead, and American Horror Story, there are more horror-themed shows on television than ever, and more on the way. (If we have to put up with shit like Teen Mom and Honey Boo Boo, it’s the least they can do.)

One upcoming new show I’m a little excited about is A&E’s BATES MOTEL, a kind of prequel to the infamous Psycho. From the official press release:

BATES MOTEL” gives viewers an intimate understanding of how Norman Bates’ psyche developed from his childhood through his teen years. Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first hand how his mother, Norma, and her love damaged Norman, helped forge the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history.

The thing that has me hopeful about BATES MOTEL is the casting of Freddy Highmore as the young Norman Bates. In movies like Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and August Rush, Highmore displays a quiet vulnerability that masks deeper emotions bubbling under the surface – a trait that makes him a brilliant choice for the part of a young serial killer in the making.

The cast includes Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Keegan Connor Tracey as Norman’s teacher, Miss Watson (maybe they’re going after some of the sultry American Horror Story vibe?)

Another promising sign is the fact that A&E decided to skip the pilot phase and go straight to series (sometime next year) – hopefully that means they’re confident in the quality of the show. Check out the newly released photo below to get a first look at Highmore and Farmiga in their respective roles.
