Original, New Dark Shadows Films creeping to home video this fall!!

Tim-Burtons-Dark-Shadows-movie

For Dark Shadows fans, both of the original Dan Curtis gothic horror-soap and of Tim Burton’s lavish re-imaging (review here), October is going to be one HELL of a month! Warner Home Video has announced that all THREE Dark Shadows films will be released on DVD and BluRay this October. 2012 seems to be the year of Dark Shadows, and October will be no exception!

Out of the crypt first on October 2nd will be the release of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins, along with Michelle Phieffer, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Chloe Moretz, and Johnny Lee Miller. No word yet on the specs, but both Burton and screenwriter Seth¬†Grahame-Smith have eluded to the fact that many scenes (and extensions of scenes) were cut from the theatrical release, so an extended edition MAY be in the works.

House/Night of Dark Shadows

On October 30th, the two original Dark Shadows films, House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows, will be released on both DVD and BluRay. Featuring Dark Shadows’ original television cast, House and Night star Lara Parker, Grayson Hall, Roger Davis, David Selby, Kathryn Leigh Scott, and, of course, Jonathan Frid as Barnabas. Both films will be presented in their original theatrical forms, and with only feature the films trailers as extras. Fans hoped that a restored version of Night of Dark Shadows would be released, but, at this time, the studio has decided to release only the theatrical version; while this news may be disappointing, I’d venture to say that we are lucky to be getting the two films on BluRay at all.

In other Dark Shadows news, the 2nd pressing of the original series will be released tomorrow, July 8th. This “Deluxe Edition” release features all 1,255 episodes, interviews from cast and crew, and a deluxe episode guide, all housed in a high-quality coffin-shaped box. This release does not feature the limited numbering or the Jonathan Frid autograph, but the rest of the content is the same as the Limited Edition (reviewed here). Orders can be made directly from MPI Home Video, or your favorite online retailer.
