The Devil Inside

It’s a shame, really – the January 5th release date for The Devil Inside made it completely ineligible for 2011 Oscar consideration. Well, that and the fact that it’s one of the worst movies in recent memory. It’s not that it doesn’t have any redeeming qualities – there are some genuinely creepy moments. The problem is, in an effort to stay true to the premise that what’s being presented is a documentary of a real event, the filmmakers were careful not to go over the top. Way too careful.

Every time things started to get interesting, the scares got dialed back to zero. For the entire first half of the movie I was struggling to figure out how it managed an R rating.

Things improved a little in the second half, but any hope of redemption was dashed by a truly bad ending. The entire audience reacted like collective deer in headlights – stunned when they realized what was about to happen, and utterly powerless to do anything about it. In my whole life, I could probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen people walk out of a theater and ask for a refund, and this was one of ’em.

The one silver lining to The Devil Inside is that it may be the film that finally slows down the spate of crappy “found footage” movies that was spawned by the success of Blair Witch Project more than a decade ago. This movie has the potential to become infamous on the order of Alone In The Dark, (or, I don’t know… Showgirls), and you can bet the next time somebody gets the urge to go all shot-on-video-shaky-cam, they’re gonna think twice before they invoke the memory of The Devil Inside.*

UPDATE: *On the other hand, The Devil Inside made $34.5 million in its opening weekend and cost less than a million to make, so yeah – we’re doomed.

Rating: 1/5 ★☆☆☆☆
